From Intern to Educator: Remington’s Inspiring Career Journey

Updated: Jun 6

At UCP, we believe in nurturing talent from within, and few stories reflect that more powerfully than Remi’s. What began as a simple volunteer opportunity soon became a transformative nine-year journey filled with purpose, growth, and a deep passion for education. Now a middle school department lead and doctoral candidate, Remi’s path captures the heart of what makes UCP a place where educators are truly empowered. In Remi’s own words:

For the past nine years, I’ve had the incredible privilege of being part of the UCP community, a place that not only shaped my career but also deeply influenced my passion for education. My journey with UCP began humbly, as a volunteer needing just 15 service-learning hours. But something about the environment, the energy, the inclusivity, the sense of purpose pulled me in. I was so inspired by the mission and the people that I went far beyond my requirement, ultimately logging over 100 volunteer hours. I found myself there so often that I was eventually offered a position in the aftercare program.
That initial role opened the door to more opportunities. I began subbing in classrooms, and it wasn’t long before I experienced a pivotal moment: I changed my major from radio and television to education. I was fortunate enough to complete my internship under the guidance of two phenomenal educators, Doris Lawson and Bonnie Olinto. They gave me the freedom to explore, create, and evolve, and their mentorship helped me discover the kind of teacher I wanted to become: one who is hands-on, innovative, and student-centered.
Today, I serve as the middle school Social Studies Department Lead while also pursuing my Doctorate in Exceptional Education. Through initiatives like Project Elevate, UCP has allowed me to grow professionally without stepping away from the classroom, which is where my heart has always been.
What makes UCP truly special is the creative freedom it offers educators to design and tailor curriculum that meets the diverse needs of all students. It has always been my belief that learning should be fun, dynamic, and engaging. When students are having fun, they’re more likely to succeed. I’m incredibly grateful to UCP for not only trusting me with that responsibility but for continuously encouraging my growth and reinforcing the confidence I have in my craft.
