Music Therapy
Music Therapy is an established health profession similar to speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. It consists of using music therapeutically to address physical, psychological, cognitive, behavioral and/or social functioning. Music Therapy involves children in singing, listening, moving, playing, and in creative activities that may help them become better learners.
Music Therapy develops a child's self-awareness, confidence, readiness skills, coping skills, physical coordination and social behavior. It should be noted that children with disabilities are not necessarily disabled in their musical skills. Music Therapy provides opportunities for children to "shine." It also reinforces nonmusical goals. Most people, especially children, enjoy music - therefore, music therapy can be the therapy that reinforces all other therapies.
Music Therapy is offered at all six UCP locations, including the Transitional Learning Academy, located at the UCP Holloway Center. Music Therapy takes place once a week in each UCP classroom during half-hour group sessions. In addition, Music Therapy may be requested as a co-treatment with other therapies (ST, OT & PT) outside of the classroom, depending on necessity and scheduling.
