UCP of Central Florida Announces Plan to Open Fully Inclusive School for Children with and without disabilities
Model will be one of the only schools in the nation to focus on the arts, technology and full inclusion

Orlando, Fla., - Imagine a world where a child with visual impairments molds the solar system out of clay while his classmate labels each planet. Imagine a world where the child in a wheelchair who sat next to you in kindergarten now sits across from you at work. Imagine a world where all children learn, play and grow together—without limitations. Thanks to UCP of Central Florida, children in East Orange County will be exposed to this, and more.
In fall 2008, UCP of Central Florida will begin construction on its new East Orange/Bailes Campus in Central Florida Research Park, which will house one of the only schools in the nation that focuses on the arts, technology and full inclusion. Designed for children in pre-k through third grade, this new research-based school is a vision for education that mirrors society by bringing together children both with and without disabilities who are often separated.
“Our goal is to help bridge the gap between children with and without disabilities by providing kids with equal learning opportunities,” said Ilene Wilkins, president and CEO of UCP of Central Florida. “In addition, through partnerships with UCF and various other organizations, we will also research and develop best practices and methods that allow students to learn and grow while developing lasting friendships with kids they may not have ever met.”
Named after the family of Charles and Jackie Bailes, the new campus will allow UCP to triple the number of children served each day and eliminate a waiting list for services that is currently at more than 180 children. UCP anticipates breaking ground on the 30,000 square foot campus in fall 2008 and opening in August 2009. Services offered will include family support, Pre-K through third grade charter school, and therapy for children up to age 21.
Over half of the $9.2 million cost for the land, facility, furniture, equipment and endowment have already been raised. For information on how to support UCP, and its new campus, visit www.ucpcfl.org or call (407) 852-3304.
